Clint Gardner’s Notes on
Die Sprache des Menschengeschlechts
(The Speech of Mankind)
In his 70’s, Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy published a two-volume compendium of what he regarded as his most important work on language, as Die Sprache des Menschengeschlechts (The Speech of Mankind). Clint Gardner published English-language versions of several of those essays in Speech and Reality (1970), in I Am an Impure Thinker (1970), and in The Origin of Speech (1981); he also annotated the table of contents for Die Sprache, marking the essays had near or exact equivalents in English, and where they could be found.
We reproduce his list here, both to mark the translation work remaining to be done and to make the English-language versions of the essays more widely available; where PDFs are available on the website, the original titles (or provisional translations of the German titles) are shown as links. Most of the linked documents are Rosenstock-Huessy’s own work; a few are draft translations, as yet unedited and unpublished, which the Fund offers here so that those who cannot read German have access to them.
